Pankaj Udhas is one of the most popular ghazal singer of our time and along
with Jagjit & Chitra Singh was responsible for resurrecting ghazals in the 1980s.
Pankaj was born at Jedpur, near Rajkot to a musical family. His father was a
dilruba player. His elder brother, Manhar Udhas, is a well known ghazal and
playback singer. He got his music training from Master Navrang and urdu lessons
from Saeed Mirza who used to teach Manhar and they moved to Bombay.
After doing a degree in science, he started working as a salesman, till he
went professional in 1976. Early years were tough and he struggled for a few
years singing to small audiences.
His first album Aahat was released in 1980. He has released
over 35 albums. His big break though came when he sang for the film Naam.
"chiTThii aaii hai aaii hai chiTThii aaii hai"
Pankaj has adopted a policy of going for simpler lyrics and easy listening
style. The songs are more filmy than classical. That made him popular with
listeners who could not follow urdu or classical music. As he says "I
try to sing ghazals which the young generation can understand. I compose myself
and try to use a blend of classical and filmi style with the help of
non-conventional instruments like violin".
